Atlanta Wine School's Connect With Wine Monthly Issue

Wine Harvest Day trip Wrap-up

An intimate group of wine lovers joined me for a look inside a winery at the peak of harvest. We visited Persimmon Creek Winery on Saturday, September 23rd, and as usual the full Hardman family crew was busy at work. Even Mitchell, Hamilton & Brigham, (seen above--the latter two nicknamed the twin torpedos) were helping mom & dad get the grapes in, entertain our tour group, run the tasting room, and crush more grapes!

I believe I speak for all attendees that we are grateful for Sonny & Mary Ann's personal attention, and for making the day special. And for those on the trip (or not) who wanted recipes for the delicious homemade cooking from Mary Ann and her mother-in-law, the recipes are here.

Finally, Patricia West sums up the trip best with her comments: "It was the most wonderful day anyone could spend - a personal tour by the owner and a fabulous lunch prepared by his lovely partner and wife.....the winery is an absolute labor of love and you can tell by the pictures I took of an actual harvest on Saturday when our tour took place....Thanks to the Atlanta Wine School, I got to participate in this awesome day!"

  • The "WORST Wine Ever" Poll
Steve De Long is at it again--this time with a poll asking voters the worst wine they've ever experienced. Unsurprisingly, Thunderbird is the running winner, with MD 20/20 close behind. However, Yellow Tail, the "wine business" sensation didn't convert everyone, as it comes in at third. View the results
  • Now Comes the Millennial Wine Drinker
These boomer children, defined until the age of late 20's, are said to be the reason wine consumption eclipsed beer (39% vs 36%) last year for the first time. Sadly though, the reason might not be so much that they prefer wine but also perhaps that beer has done such a poor job of promoting itself. How important is this population segment to wine growth? Well, wine uber-lord Kendall Jackson has set up a separate division called "White Rocket." More on the story
  • How Much Money Do Wine People Make?
The average wine industry salary raise in 2006 was 5.4% versus a non-wine industry average of 3.5%. The average salary for a winemaker is $93,358 and the vineyard manager was $80,400. Full Survey
  • Achieving the Ph.D. of Wine Knowledge: Masters of Wine
Your editor here "used" to think he wanted to be a Master of Wine (and frankly contemplates the notion ever so often). It is an impressive designation and a pinnacle of achievement, surmounting in ardor and prestige the coveted Master Sommelier credential. By comparison, the US has some 60-70 Master Sommeliers, however it has only 24 Masters of Wine. Full Story
  • Henri Jayer, Famous Burgundian Winemaker, Dies
Alain Hayat, editor of the wine review The Red and White, says it best about Jayer: "People seized his bottles as if they were treasures," he said. "He had a gift, a touch, a feeling for wine. He was like one of those great composers that you only see once in a generation." More
  • Need to Appraise Your Wines? Do it Yourself with this Website
Real estate is worth what the market is willing to pay. And a wine that is ten years past vintage will also have a value IF it is "still alive" and IF there are auction sales which suggest its value in the marketplace. Thus if you tap into such data, you might be able to value your wines! More
  • Thomas Jefferson Wine Bottles Deemed Fraud
Four bottles of Bordeaux, two Lafites and two Moutons, were claimed to have been sealed up behind a cellar wall in Paris. The buyer believes he was duped in paying for the most expensive bottle of wine in the world. More
